In April of 2019, a team of volunteers gathered on a Sunday morning to prepare the holes and plant nine different types of apple trees that were suitable for the northern climate. The workers prepared large holes for the trees along the edge of the stormwater infiltration pond, adding rich black soil and fertilizer. Each tree received a thick wood mulch to help maintain a moderate soil temperature around the roots, keep the weeds down, and keep moisture in the ground. Due to all of the deer in the area, each tree had to be protected by fencing. A single apple tree can produce hundreds of pounds of apples per year. Therefore, when mature in a few years, our small orchard could produce thousands of pounds of apples per year!
